LEWISTON – Edith E. Mason, 94, a resident of Hogan Road, Lewiston, formerly of Auburn, died Saturday evening at Montello Manor following a brief illness.
She was born in Peabody, Mass., on Jan. 6, 1914, the daughter of Oliver and Margaret (Normandeau) La Fontaine.
Edith moved to Auburn at a young age, and met and married her childhood sweetheart, Roy A. Mason. Together with her husband, Roy, they operated the former roller skating rink at Lewiston fairgrounds for many years. She was also a former Girl Scout leader, and will always be remembered for her sense of humor. She was also noted as a “Cook of the Week” in a recent Sun Journal article. Her love of cooking and baking was demonstrated by her annual 4th of July family gatherings, which she enjoyed, and later in life being a cook’s helper at Montello Manor. She also volunteered to teach Montello Manor residents arts and crafts, which she enjoyed, and her love for music and family gatherings were also a big part of her happiness in life.
Survivors include one daughter, Ann Mason Palmer and husband, Owen, of Lewiston; two grandchildren, Christopher Palmer and wife, Anna, of Lewiston and Betsy Shivers and husband, Zachary, of Fryeburg; three great-grandchildren, Nicole, Benjamin and Elizabeth Shivers, all of Fryeberg. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and special friends who will always cherish her memory. She also leaves behind her devoted German shepard, “Royal” and her cat, “Grizabelle.”
She was predeceased by her husband, Roy A. Mason; and several brothers and sisters.
