AUGUSTA – Clyde Norman Manwell, 85, a resident of Old Lewiston Road, Winthrop, passed away in his sleep on Thursday, Oct. 16, at Glenridge Elder Care Center.
He was born on May 13, 1923, the son of Clyde C. and Mary Thaanum Manwell, of Glencoe, Scotland.
Norm, as he preferred to be called, served in the Pacific with the Sea Bee’s, surveying grades and layouts for airstrips and installations. He was recalled during the Korean War and served at Argentia Naval Base in Newfoundland.
Norm was a graduate of Wentworth Institute in Boston where he learned engineering and architecture.
On June 30, 1946, he married Carolyn Foster in Coopers Mills.
In 1947, he started working for Maine State Parks and Recreation where he was employed for 37 years, retiring in 1983 as director of planning and land acquisition. Reid, Lily Bay, Mount Blue, Sebago, Two Lights and many others were developed by the department and his fellow workers. During his career with them, he made an invaluable contribution to the acquisition, development and conservation of the 67,577 acres that encompass Maine State Park lands, his favorite being Reid State Park.
After retirement, he enjoyed working in his workshop, designing cemetery fences, and making things for the grandchildren. He loved going to their camp on Wilson Pond where he spent many enjoyable summers. Norm enjoyed monitoring lake water conditions in local ponds, making his own maple syrup, getting firewood and doing outdoor work. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a past master at Monmouth Lodge No. 110 AF AM.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn Foster Manwell, of Winthrop; a son, Ronald B. Manwell and his significant other, Pam Wing; a daughter, Anne Killeen, of Augusta; three grandchildren, Shawn Killeen and his wife, Ali, of Biddeford, Conor Killeen and his wife, Magdalena, of Winston Salem, N.C., and Ryan Manwell of Augusta; and a great-granddaughter, Annie.
