GRAY – Hazel Cole, 93, of 24 Hancock St., Gray, died Monday, July 7, at the Central Maine Medical Center. She was born in Danforth on June 12, 1915, the daughter of Ethel and Dutton Gilpatrick. She graduated from Milo High School and Gorham Normal School in 1934.
In 1934 she married Ernest L. Libby of Gray and raised a family of six children. For many years she served as an elementary school teacher in the Gray public schools, prior to working in the Gray town office,
In 1956 she married Norman Cole, the founder and owner of Cole Farms Restaurant. She was a constant presence at the Restaurant, filling in on the day-to-day operations of a growing business. Her sense of humor, quick wit, generosity and willingness to help out wherever needed were amazing – she was quickly and permanently admired by her co-workers and friends.
Throughout her life, Hazel was active in many community activities and events. She was member of the Gray Congregational Church, the “Remember When” senior citizens organization, and an eager participant in the F & G Square Dance Club. She was a world traveler, an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed playing a “mean game of cribbage.”
Surviving are her son, Lawrence Libby of Mt.Vernon, Wash.; four daughters, Patricia Barter of New York City, Diane Tarr of Venice, Fla., Constance Hall of The Villages, Fla., and Jean Webb of New Gloucester; 15 grandchildren; 30 greatgrandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A son, Donald Libby, died in 1990.
