FARMINGTON – Doris Venessa (Henderson) Atwood, 95, of North New Portland, formerly of Wilton, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Franklin Memorial Hospital.
She was born Jan. 26, 1912, in Lexington, the daughter of Arthur L. and Venessa (Page) Henderson.
She moved to North New Portland in 1914, where she attended local schools, graduating from Central High School in East New Portland with the class of 1929, and went on to graduate from Gray’s Business School in Portland. She married Donald Ward Atwood, Dec. 14, 1935.
She worked for Chase Hewett Co. in East New Portland. The family moved to Wilton in 1946, where she worked for Wilton Woolen, G.H. Bass and Depositor’s Trust Co. (Keybank) as manager of the mortgage department, retiring in 1973.
While in Wilton, she taught Sunday school at the Congregational church and was a Brownie Scout Troop leader. She took great pride in knowing her forebears helped settle New Portland and moved back to “the North” in 1975, after her husband Donald’s death. She was active in the Wire Bridge Extension, and WOW’s. She enjoyed her small business making and selling crafts, family genealogy, town history, scrap booking, cross word puzzles and the Boston Celtics. The love of her life was her family.
Survivors include a daughter, Dona Atwood Olson and husband, Thomas, of Rutland, Vt.; grandchildren, Kristen Myers and Kimberly Mikitka of Andover, Mass.; great-granddaughters, Abigail and Stephanie Myers; also several much loved nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Lisa Emery.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Bernice Henderson and Thirza Leavitt; and two brothers, Kenneth and Arthur Henderson.
