LEWISTON – Maurice R. Champoux, 80, a resident of Pine Street, Lewiston died suddenly on June 5th surrounded by his loving family at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.
He was born January 23, 1928 to Hormidas & Albertine (Laroche) Champoux. He married Pauline (Michel) on June 6, 1953.
He started the Champoux Insurance Agency in June 1954. He bought more than eight agencies growing the business from a two-person operation to a multi-location operation with more than 30 employees. Maurice’s real passion was computers. He was the first to computerize an insurance operation in the state. He developed the first insurance rating system that he marketed to insurance agencies throughout the state. He was an outstanding business man that gave many people opportunities for successful insurance careers. He was not just a boss, he truly cared about each and every person and his generosity had no limit.
Maurice served on many community and insurance boards. He was a singer in the Orpheon Choir and the St. Peter & Paul Choir. He was past president of the following organizations: Junior Chamber of Commerce, Vigilant, St. Pierre Credit Union, St. Peter’s School Committee, St. Dom’s School Committee, a member of Lewiston Development Board, he served on the Hanover Insurance Company and Patrons-Oxford Insurance Company advisory boards. He was an active member of SCORE. He also served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was very instrumental at setting up his 60th St. Dom’s High School class reunion this past summer. He worked tirelessly to assemble his graduating class and enjoyed reminiscing with his old classmates.
Maurice was always at his happiest when he was surrounded by his family and friends.
He loved people and enjoyed helping others. He was always available for rides to school or sports. He will be sadly missed by his family.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Pauline; his daughters Louise Champoux and Diane Iannotti and her husband David; his grandchildren, Jonathan Nagy, Christopher Nagy, Stephen Nagy II, Michele Nagy and Michael and Daniel Iannotti; his great granddaughters Mia Nagy & Jocylnn Iannotti; a sister in law, Pauline Champoux as well as nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Normand Champoux.
