OQUOSSOC – Dwight H. Gurney Jr., 64, of Backkingdom Road, Mexico, died unexpectedly Friday, May 30, at his camp in Oquossoc.
He was born in Rumford on Feb. 28, 1944, a son of Evelyn Mae (Walker) and Dwight H. Gurney Sr. He was a 1962 graduate of Mexico High School.
He retired from the Mead Westvaco Mill after 43 years of service.
Dwight was a communicant of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church.
He was a member of the Webb River Valley Sportsman’s Club and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Post 1248.
Dwight was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved woodworking, fly tying, crafting sea glass jewelry and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a big local sports fan and Bruins fan.
Dwight loved feeding the deer and turkeys in the winter, and also loved music.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Andrea M. (Bernard) Gurney of Mexico; three children, Michael Gurney and wife, Cheryl, and their children, Mercedes and Random, of Rumford, Andrew Gurney and wife, Gina, and their son, Andrew, of South Portland, and Daryl Gurney and wife, Erin, and their children, Samuel and Elizabeth, of Raymond; a brother, Thomas Gurney and wife, Jo, of Mechanic Falls; a sister, Donna Foreman and companion, Ed Merrifield, of Rumford; a brother, Gary Gurney and wife, Jennifer, of Rumford; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and very special friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Evelyn Walker Gurney and Dwight H. Gurney Sr.; a brother, Richard Gurney Sr.; and a brother-in-law, Mickey Foreman.
