FARMINGTON – Esther Annette Woods Harnden, 91, of Rangeley, died Saturday, May 24, at Franklin Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Baltimore, Md., March 6, 1917, the daughter of Arthur G. and Esther M. (Milberg) Woods. She graduated from White Plains High in New York. She married Frederick Harnden in Rangeley on Aug. 12, 1941.
She worked as a secretary in New York, as a young lady, then she and her husband moved to Stamford, Conn., where their three children were born.
In 1946, the family moved to Rangeley to operate the Barker Hotel, which closed in the mid-1960s. During the 1960s and 1970s, they lived in New Hampshire, while she worked for Strawberry Banke until Fred’s retirement, when they came back to Rangeley permanently.
She was an active member of the Rangeley Congregational Church, being one of the founding members. She enjoyed needle work, crafts, played golf and went fishing with Fred. She loved to have the children and grandchildren visit in Rangeley.
She is survived by her husband, Fred; her daughter, Lynn Lewandowski of Rangeley; two sons, Paul Harnden and his wife, Jane, of Amherst, N.H., and Stuart Harnden and his wife, Denise, of Bedford, N.H.; four grandchildren, Richard, Stephen, Stacy and James; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Sarah and Brooke; and her brother, Robert Woods and his wife, Jeana, of Colorado.
