OTISFIELD – On Thursday, May 8, as the birds began their morning singing and the sun was coming up over Scribner Hill, Muriel S. Haggerty passed away with her family by her side at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Albert and Pat Haggerty. During the past two weeks, all her “boys” had came home to comfort, express their love and appreciation for her unconditional love and support for them.
Muriel (Swicker) Haggerty was born on Sept. 11, 1920 in Biddeford, to Victor C. and Margie (Bradbury) Swicker. Mrs. Haggerty was raised in Hartford, Conn., graduating from Weaver High School and then continuing her education at Bates College in Lewiston where she graduated with a dual degree in chemistry and biology. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
While at Bates, she met the love of her life, Jasper Haggerty Jr., whom she married after a four-day engagement on Nov. 26, 1942, only to see him go to the Pacific Front for the next three years. Upon his homecoming in 1945, they purchased the farm known as Haggerty Farms in Harrison, which became her home until 1998. She then moved to Schooner Estates in Auburn.
She raised three sons, Charles, Bruce and Albert. She saw the joy of her grandchildren, Cyrus and Travis Haggerty, and later in life, Erick and George Garlarneau.
Mrs. Haggerty was a life member of Elm Vale Eastern Star, Chapter/Maine Farm Bureau, and the Calvary Community Church of Harrison, where she served as a bell ringer for many years. She served as a receiving agent for the Salvation Army and American Red Cross, and also served as treasurer for the Stuarts Corner Cemetery Association. She managed the finances of the family farm as well as several outside groups.
She was employed at Bridgton Knitting Mills from 1962 until she retired in 1983. During World War II, she was a quality inspector on airplane parts for Pratt and Whitney in Connecticut.
She always had a garden on Haskell Hill and in the fall, the freezer was always full and the shelves were always loaded with canned veggies and jellies. She enjoyed family, spending time with her family at her camp on Island Pond and visiting parents in Florida. She was an avid swimmer and bridge player. She always insisted on Sunday drives so her children would know their grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. In the summer, this meant many trips to Old Orchard Beach during the ’50s and ’60s.
She is survived by three sons, Charles E. and his wife, Judith, of Norman, Okla., Bruce W. of Alviso, Calif., and Albert and wife, Pat, of Otisfield; four grandchildren, Cyrus and Jennie of Summerville, S.C., Travis and Jessica of Harrison, George Garlarneau of Otisfield, and Erick Garlarneau of Pacifica, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Landon of Harrison.
She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Jasper C. Jr.
