Auburn – Arthur L. Bergeron, 98, of Odd Fellows Home, formerly of 96 Broad St., passed away on Sunday, April 6, at the Androscoggin Hospice House with his family by his side.

He was born in Lewiston on Feb. 19, 1910. He was the son of Ovide and Alphonsine Aube Bergeron. He was the last survivor of 16 children.

He was educated in a one-room schoolhouse on Webster and Pond Road. At the age of 10, he would harness the horse and buggy and pick up his teacher, Miss Johnson, to bring her to school.

On May 30, 1932, he married Irene Lavertu, who predeceased him on Feb. 14, 1970. He later married Jeannette Leblanc.

For many years he worked in the shoe industry after which he became self-employed. He owned and operated Bergeron Cash Market and also an apple orchard.

In later years, he was employed by the Auburn School Department as a bus driver and maintenance worker. His favorite past time was growing flowers and vegetables which he would share with family and friends.

He was devoted to his local parish, St. Louis Church, and served on the parish council, Eucharistic minister and he was also active with the Oblate Fathers at the retreat house in Augusta and was a Cursillista (De Colores).

Survivors include three daughters, Constance and husband, Edward Roy, of Lewiston, Janet and husband, Patrick Hurley, of Atkinson, N.H., and Anita and husband, Larry Daigle, of Auburn; a son, Andre Bergeron and wife, Doris, of Lewiston; daughter-in-law, Patricia Bergeron of Lisbon; sister-in-law, Terry LaChapelle of Windham; also 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Irene; a son, Arthur G. Bergeron; two grandchildren, David Roy and Nadine Daigle; and nine sisters and six brothers.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the care given by the wonderful staff at Odd Fellows Home and the Hospice House.
