FARMINGTON – Rose M. Mancine, 90, a resident of Middle Street in Riley, died Tuesday, April 1, at Franklin Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She had resided at Sandy River Nursing Home in Farmington for the past five years.

She was born on Oct. 7, 1917, in Cliffwood, N.J., the daughter of Rocco and Linda (Castalucci) DeMatteo and attended schools in Morristown, N.J. On Oct. 14, 1939, in Keyport, N.J., she married James A. Mancine of Jay. They made their home and raised their family in Riley. He passed away in 1978.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who was passionate about her family. Her family meant the world to her and she loved them dearly and, as well as being a mother to her sons, she was also their close friend.

She was an exceptional cook, who will be fondly remembered for her many trays of Italian cookies. Her family and many friends looked forward to the holidays, weddings and many special occasions to see the intricate cookies displayed.

She also made many gifts of these one-of-a-kind desserts. She was a very kind and caring person who always lent a hand to help people in need and in turn people also cared deeply for her.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew her and loved her. She was very proud of her Italian heritage and of being a skilled homemaker; in her spare time she enjoyed sewing, knitting, quilting and was an avid gardener and even at the age of 85 enjoyed mowing her lawn. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay, a former communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Riley and a member of the Rosary Sodality.

She is survived by two sons, James Francis Mancine and his wife, Mary Anne (Legere), of Riley and Daniel Mancine and his wife, Susan (Ouellette), of Jay; sisters, Rita Jiosne of Cliffwood, N.J., Palma Calicari of Keyport, N.J., Ann Dietrich of Whiting, N.J., Vera Tenore of Homosassa Spring, Fla., Theresa Stabile of Whiting, N.J., Mary Grace Kelley of Whiting, N.J., and Linda “Cammille” Langan of Middletown, N.J.; four grandchildren, Sandra Batchelder, Stacey Koloski, Dominic Mancine and Jason Mancine; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband; and a brother, Dominik DeMatteo, who passed away in 2000.
