WINTHROP – Eleanor Blake Flanders, 93, a lifelong resident of Maple Street, Monmouth, died Tuesday, March 18, at Winthrop Manor, with family members at her side.

She was born in Monmouth on June 10, 1914, the daughter of Harold H. and Anna Tilton Blake Flanders. She attended grammar school in Monmouth and was a 1933 graduate of Monmouth Academy.

For many years, she worked as a telephone operator for the Lewiston, Greene and Monmouth Telephone Co. She also was a U.S. postal clerk in Monmouth, retiring from that position in 1972. She lived her entire life in the house where she was born.

She was a 50-plus year member of Monmouth Grange 39, the United Church of Monmouth and its women’s group, serving as the church treasurer for a long time and was a Monmouth Library board member.

She enjoyed playing Upwards, Scrabble and bridge; she did crossword puzzles, knitting, crocheting and sewing and making many quilts. She volunteered at the Monmouth Museum during the summer, also at the thrift shop at the church, worked on the Christmas baskets for the Cottrell-Taylor Fund and she was a constant support for local charities. Though she never married, she was very close to her extended family and was affectionately known as “Sisty.”

She is survived by nieces, Sharon Brown of Brunswick, Deborah Betit and her husband, Paul, of Brunswick and Mary Turner and her husband, Chuck, of Gorham; nephews, David Flanders of Newton, Mass., and Kendall Brown and his wife, Cheryl, of Evansville, Ind.; and grandnieces and grandnephews, Abby and Allison Turner, Charles and Christopher Betit and Hannah Brown.

She was predeceased by her brother, H. Earle Flanders in 1993; her sister, Mary F. Brown in 2005; her brother-in-law, Charles T. Brown in 2005; and her sister-in-law, Mildred Flanders in 2007.

The family would like to offer special thanks to Health Reach, the employees of Winthrop Manor and Paula Parsons, who cared for Eleanor while she was at home.
