Lewiston – Ralph G. Baril, 93, of Schooner Estates, died Saturday morning March 1, at Central Maine Medical Center. He was born in Lowell, Mass., March 24, 1914, the son of Frederick and Felixine (Diotte) Baril.
He was educated in Lowell schools and came to Auburn during the shoe manufacturing boom in the 1940s, where he became a lifelong resident. In 1943, he married Mary M. Hughes, who died in 1999.
He served his country in the U.S. Army landslide until 1945. A machinist technician by trade, he retired from United Shoe Machinery after 25 years, then continued to work part-time at Maine Thread and Machine Company until he was 88, driving his truck to work.
He belonged to The Ancient Brothers Lodge Masons and The Kora Temple Shrine, where he served as Librarian for the Chanters for many years. After retirement, he enjoyed his annual trips to Arizona to visit his son and his family. While there, he met many nice friends and developed an appreciation for the beautiful Southwest.
He is survived by two sons, Richard Baril and wife, Jeanne, of Greene, and David Baril and wife, Carol, of Glendale, Ariz.; two daughters, Brenda Ross and Judy Baril of Auburn; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Leon Baril and wife, Simone, of Bingham.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Annette Lawrence, two brothers, Alfred Baril and Arthur Baril, and a sister, Adelaide Maguire.
He will be sadly missed by his loving family and friends, and his sense of humor will always be remembered. The family would like to thank the staff at CMMC cardiac unit on 3Y, especially Wanda and Karen, for their exceptional kindness and support given him during his last hours.
