AUBURN – Jamsie Couture, 97, passed away Feb. 7, at the Hospice House after a brief illness. She had been a resident at Sarah Frye Home since October 2002.
She was born Jan. 27, 1911, on Mt. Pisgah Road in Winthrop, the daughter of James and Grace (Frost) Dudley. She was educated in Monmouth schools, spending most of her early years in North Monmouth. Growing up she loved to ice skate on the Mill Pond in North Monmouth. Later, she spent many happy evenings dancing at Island Park, Moonglow and other nearby spots.
For many years she worked in local mills, notably Libbey Mill in Lewiston and Carleton Woolen Mill in Winthrop.
She loved gardening, and in her later years was known for the beautiful flowers, which graced the corner of Bowdoin and Central streets in Winthrop.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, one of whom was her special caregiver, Marge Webber. There was a loving place in her heart for Robert Strout of Austin, Texas, who was like a son to both Jamsie and Merle.
She was predeceased by both her husbands, Merle F. Curtis and Raymond Couture; her two children, Faye and Dudley, who died in infancy; and her sisters, Mattie Hooker of Winthrop, Mamie Dunn and Angie Wallace, both of Monmouth.
