LEWISTON – Cheryl Gail Mattingly, RN, 58, of Montello Manor, died Jan. 27, with her family at her side after a long illness.

She was born Cheryl Gail Peterson in Lewiston, April 6, 1947, the daughter of Richard and Beverly Jepson Peterson of Auburn. She attended Auburn schools, graduating from Edward Little High School with the class of 1965.

She graduated from Lakes Region Hospital School of Nursing, Laconia, N.H., in 1968. She was employed at Central Maine Medical Center and Montello Manor prior to her appointment as Auburn’s health nurse in 1971 and, subsequently, health officer for the city of Auburn in 1979 until a stroke forced her retirement in 1983.

During her career, she was the corporator for the Auburn Public Library, a member of the Governor’s Task Force on long term care, the board of directors of the Lewiston-Auburn Children’s Home, the state of Maine Health Officers Association, the advisory council of Lewiston-Auburn Head Start, as well as various committees for the United Way. After her illness, she was an Alpha 1 peer counselor.

She was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and NCAA basketball, and was an avid cribbage and scrabble player.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn (Kate) and husband, Scott and grandson, Logan McConnaughey of Auburn; a son, Kristoffer Mattingly, USCG and fianceé, Ashton Powell, of Forks, Wash.; her mother, Beverly J. Peterson of Auburn; a sister, Gay Metevier and her husband, Paul, of North Yarmouth; a brother, Stephen Peterson and his wife, Sandra, of Richmond, Va.; an uncle and aunt, Bruce and Cecile Peterson of Sarasota, Fla.; six nieces and nephews, Seth, Mary, Lauren and Molly Metevier of North Yarmouth and Bradford and Leah Peterson of Richmond, Va.; and two cousins, Cynthia Scott of Burnt Hills, N.Y., and Jan Etre of Worcester, Mass.

She was predeceased by her son, Joshua Tod; and her father, Richard E. Peterson.
