AVON – Andrew S. Phillips Sr., 85, of Avon, died Jan. 12, at his home, after a long illness.

He was born June 8, 1922, in Avon, a son of Austin and Ethel (Haley) Phillips. He was educated in the schools of Avon. He married Lois Campbell, June 12, 1949. She died Nov. 27, 2000.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War, where he obtained the rank of staff sergeant. He received the American Campaign Medal, Meritorious Unit Emblem, Pacific Campaign, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army Occupational with Japan Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

He worked for McClain Wood Mill and Diamond Match Mill in Phillips, also worked for Robert Sanders, Ernest Pinkham, Richards Garage, Basil Rowe Garage, Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut, C.A.T. Lumber and SA D 58, until he retired in 1984.

He was a member of the Prescott Fairbanks Post 64, where he was a 60-year member. He donated to many charities. He enjoyed woodworking, bird watching and gardening.

He is survived by two sons, Leslie Phillips and his wife, Karen, of Avon and Andrew S. Phillips Jr. and his fiancée, Cheryl, of Phillips; two daughters, Terisa Phillips and partner, Bob, of Livermore Falls and Ethel Arsenault and partner, Rick, of Inverness, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
