Augusta – Dolard J. Mathieu, 88, of Harmons Corner Road, Auburn, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Maine Veterans’ Home.
He was born in St. Methode, P.Q., Canada, March 8, 1919, the son of Joseph Isidore and Desneige Turcotte Mathieu.
He served his country in the U.S. Army Infantry, Co. L, 304th Infantry Regiment during World War II and was the recipient of the Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon and the Occupational Medal from Germany.
He was married to Anna Turmel, Oct. 18, 1941. He was employed as a hand sewer at Bellmoc Shoe In Lewiston, Freemoc Shoe in Freeport and retired from Quoddy Moccasin in 1981. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Parish and enjoyed the company of his grandchildren and hunting and fishing.
He was a well-known figure at Lake Auburn during fishing season and was an accomplished horseshoe pitcher, having won many awards with the Horseshoe Association. He was a member of the American Legion Post 22.
He is survived by his wife, Anna, of Auburn; a daughter, Jeanne Arneault and husband, Ronald, of Lewiston; three sons, Paul D. Mathieu and wife, Jeanne, of Lewiston, John A. Mathieu and wife, Beatrice, of Lewiston and Leo A. Mathieu and wife, Sue, of Plano, Texas; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Muriel and Therese Mathieu, both of Lewiston; and many nieces and nephews.
His family would like to extend a special thank-you to the staff at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta and the Augusta Hospice.
