SKOWHEGAN – Harry L. Smith, 74, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, after a battle with cancer.

He was born Sept. 4, 1933, in Salem, the first son of the late Ralph and Olive (Ranger) Smith. He was educated in various Franklin County schools, located in Salem, Phillips, Livermore Falls, Wilton and North Jay. He attended Wilton Academy for one year and graduated from Dixfield High School in 1951.

He held several jobs over the years, including working at Rangeley Lakes Hotel as a bell hop, driving trucks for Rangeley Motor Express and working at the Phillips Heel Mill. He had also worked at Oxford Paper Co. in Rumford, then at Scott Paper Co. in Hinkley, from which he retired at the age of 61.

He was a dedicated member of the Skowhegan Madison Elks Lodge and the Skowhegan Eagles Club. He was a director for Kennebec Valley Bowling Association from its founding until it changed to USBC. He was also a member of KVBA Hall of Fame. He loved sports and was involved in many of them. His favorites were bowling, golfing and horseshoes. He enjoyed helping anyone who needed a hand. He was dedicated and hard working and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years of marriage and were together for 30 years, Vicki (Charrier) Burns; three daughters, Devin and Tanya Smith, of Skowhegan and Margaret (Peggy) Pelletier and husband, Dan, of Canton; two sons, Harry Jr. and wife, Joanne, of Canton and Dennis and wife, Patty, of Mexico; two brothers, Clarence Smith and wife, Mary, of Mexico and Charles Smith of Livermore Falls; five stepsisters, Roberta, Adele, Dorothy, Phyllis and Joann; stepbrother, Harris Bradeen Jr.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his sister, Ruth Parkman; brother, Larry Smith; stepbrother, Ronald Buck; and stepsister, Louise.
