Albany- Arthur Wardwell, 91, of Albany, passed away Nov. 4, at the home where he was born, July 19, 1916, the son of Roy and Hazel (Kimball) Wardwell.
He was educated in the Dresser and Clark schools and the hills and woods of Albany.
He married Alice Andrews on Oct. 5, 1940, and they had twin daughters, his family and grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the love of his life. Many nieces and nephews spent a lot of time at the farm also.
He started mowing the family farms fields at the age of 13 with the “new” mowing machine, he cut and hauled ice for neighbors, during the depression he worked in a sawmill in Stoneham, after the Flood of ’36, he worked with his truck for the WPA repairing many bridges in Albany, he plowed snow in Albany with the town’s crawler tractor, then for many years in Woodstock. He did farming and gardening, but loved logging his wood lots and working with wood. At age 90, he split six cords of wood with his wood splitter.
He was a true woodsman and hunter, he got his first deer at age 15 and his last at age 84, both 10-point bucks weighing over 200 pounds. He shot a bobcat in 1956, the crowning glory was his moose hunt in the Allagash in 1996, when at age 80, he got a Bull Moose weighing 1,205 pounds, the second largest on record in the state at the time. He loved to go partridge hunting with his daughter Jane, they, with Alice, hunted in the Allagash each fall for 20 years. He enjoyed camping in Greenville and Baxter State Park, trips to Niagara Falls, Quebec and Prince Edward Island, Mich., Gettysburg, and Amish Country in Pennsylvania. He was a member and longtime trustee of the Albany Congregational Church, a former trustee of the Hunts Corner Cemetery Association, and past member of SAM, Maine Trappers Association, and National Rifleman’s Association.
He will be greatly missed by daughter, Jane; grandson, Darria Reynolds and wife, Jamie; granddaughters, Jessica Nye and husband, Nic; great-grandchildren, Samantha, Isaiah, Jeanae and Mckayla; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Alice, in 1998; and daughter, Jean, in 1992.
