SOUTH CHINA – Durward L. “Dud” Durrell Jr., 76, of Mayflower Lane, died Oct. 23, at his home after an extended illness.

He was born in Farmington, on May 9, 1931, the son of Durward L. Durrell Sr. and Freda (Mitchell) Durrell.

Dud graduated from Wilton Academy, where he excelled in football, basketball and track.

He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

During 20 years of service with the Maine State Police, he was Gov. John Reed’s chauffeur and later went on to become detective sergeant. Prior to his retirement, Detective Sgt. Durrell was commended for 20 years of “excellent” service to the people of Maine.

He enjoyed the outdoors throughout his life. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and snowmobiler and loved spending time with his friends at camp. He was a member of Boynton-Webber American Legion Post of South China and the Salem Snowmobile Club.

Surviving is his wife, Geraldine A. (Judkins) Durrell of South China; a son, Terry D. Durrell of Portland; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and three brothers, Harold, Phillips and Herbert Durrell.
