SALISBURY, N.C. – Donald Curtis Webster, 89, of Salisbury, N.C., passed away at the Rowan Regional Medical Center on Oct. 4.
He was born on May 15, 1918, in Auburn, a son of the late Ralph Lee Webster and Saidee Curtis Webster of Turner Street in Auburn. He graduated from Edward Little High School in 1935. He also graduated in 1941 from Bates College in Lewiston, where he majored in French.
While at Bates, Mr. Webster was an outstanding collegiate athlete, lettering in baseball, basketball and track and field. In 1939, he set the Maine collegiate high jump record.
He was retired from the U.S. Army after a 26-year career. During World War II, he fought in the Pacific Theater, including under Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the Phillippines.
He is survived by his son, Donald Curtis Webster Jr. of Mt. Ulla, N.C.; and by his daughter, Ann Webster Rea of Denver, Colo.
He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Ruth Allen Webster; and by his twin brothers, Kent and Keith Webster.
