KINGFIELD – Odlin P. “Oddy” Thompson, 73, died at his home unexpectedly and with great shock to his family and friends Wednesday, Oct. 10.
Oddy was born in Kingfield, the son of Harriet (Philpot) and Austin Thompson. Oddy grew up in Kingfield, attending Kingfield schools and graduating from Kingfield High School in 1952. During high school, he worked at Amos Winter’s General Store and spent many winter weekends skiing as one of the “Bigelow Boys,” eventually helping to cut the first trail on Sugarloaf.
He attended Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute, graduating in 1955. He then worked with his father at Thompson’s Garage on Main Street and performing contract plowing for the state. Oddy was also a member of the volunteer ski patrol at Sugarloaf.
In 1962, Oddy married Joan Sanders in Phillips and they continued to live in Kingfield raising their three sons. Oddy and Joan purchased his father’s business in 1974 incorporating as Thompson’s Equipment in 1975. Together they grew the company from an earthwork business into a successful forest products trucking company.
Oddy was a 50-year member of the Mt. Abram Masonic Lodge AF and AM where he was a past master. He also served as the manager of the Kingfield Water District for 18 years.
He retired from the trucking business in 2000. Since then, he thoroughly enjoyed working for Adrian Brochu, helping develop and maintain all aspects of Ira Mountain in Kingfield.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family, working and playing outside. Oddy made a hobby out of his work.
Oddy is terribly missed and survived by Joan, his wife of 45 years; their three sons, Todd and his wife, Mary Jo, of Kingfield, Toby and his wife, Kelly, of Manchester, and Tim and his wife, Lisa, of Farmington; brother, Austin of Redmond, Ore.; mother-in-law, Florice Sanders of Phillips; brother-in-law, Nick Sanders of Phillips; sister-in-law, Ellen Lizotte of Kensington, N.H.; grandchildren, Zachary, Brandon, Aashley, Chelsea, Walker and Makenzie; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Gail Pierce; and brother, Arthur Thompson.
Oddy will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
