Lewiston – Charles E. Castonguay, 91, of Sabattus Street, died Saturday, Sept. 15, with his loving family at his side.

He was born in Lewiston on Aug. 1, 1916, a son to the late Joseph and Amanda (Cloutier) Castonguay where he was brought up on River Street, also known as “Little Canada.”

After serving his country in the U.S. Army, Charles married Irene Mathieu in 1951, and together they raised their two sons. Irene died in 1971, and Charles then married the former Yolande Poulin Mercier in 1981, who also predeceased him in 2000.

He worked for many years as a carpenter and later became a loom fixer at Bates Mill until he retired completely at the age of 70.

He was a recent member of Holy Family Church, American Legion Post 22, and VFW.

He enjoyed carpentry work, many home projects, spending time at home and visiting with his family.

He leaves two sons, Denis Castonguay and his wife, Nancy, of Lewiston, and Robert Castonguay of Lewiston; three grandchildren, Derek Castonguay of Kent, Wash., Kevin Castonguay and Renee Castonguay, both of Lewiston; two sisters, Marie Rose Rioux and Lucille Barrett, both of Lewiston; a brother, Gerard Castonguay of Lewiston; and many nieces and nephews; extended family and friends.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Rita Castonguay and Josephine Caron; and three brothers, Joseph, Roland and Lionel Castonguay.

Charles lived a long and fulfilling life, and his family will be left with many fond memories.
