GORHAM – Burton Anderson, 96, of the Gorham House, formerly of Auburn and Buxton, died Aug. 12, at Maine Medical Center.
He was born in Durham, Oct. 21, 1910, son of Emil Hardwick Anderson and Maren Johnson Anderson. He was a graduate of Brunswick High School, Gorham Normal School and attended the University of Maine. While a student, he worked for his father’s company on the construction of the Cribstone Bridge in Harpswell. He was employed at the Auburn Post Office for 38 years, retiring from the position of assistant postmaster.
His Masonic affiliations include serving as treasurer of the Buxton Lodge for 20 years, York County Shrine Club, Shrine Club of Greater Portland, the Scottish Rite Bodies, Kora Temple of Lewiston and Pleasant River Chapter of Eastern Star.
He was an adult leader for Boy Scouts in the Auburn and Lewiston area for more than 20 years. He was past president of the Gorham State College Alumni Association. He was also a member of the Southern Maine Gorham Alumni Association. He was the first recipient of the University of Southern Maine Hill Top Award, the Alumni Association’s highest honor.
He received a special award for outstanding service to the USM Alumni Association. He was a member of the Buxton-Hollis Historical Society and the Casco Bay Chapter of Retired Federal Employees.
He enjoyed sports, construction, gardening, reading, cribbage and jigsaw puzzles.
He is survived by his son, Peter and wife, Andrea, of Casco and Tucson, Ariz.; three grand-children; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Beatrice, having been married for 71 years; a son, Reginald; three sisters, Evelyn Brocato, Olive Hickey Brocato and L. Doris Ferguson; and one brother, Clifford Anderson.
