BATH – Clarence G. Atwood Sr., 87, of Washington Street, died Friday, Aug. 10, at a local hospital, after a long illness.
He was born in Bath on July 1, 1920, the son of Clarence E. and Dolly Ryan Atwood. He attended local schools and graduated from Morse High School, Class of 1939. He then enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On Sept. 26, 1942, he married Carolyn L. Walton. He worked for the New England Telephone Co. as a lineman and then later as an installer, a career he held for more than 45 years.
In his spare time, he enjoyed duck and deer hunting, fishing and working in his vegetable gardens. He loved playing golf and was a longtime member of the Bath Country Club, where he would also play cards on rainy days. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bath.
He is survived by two sons, Clarence G. Jr., and his wife, Tangie Atwood, of Texas, and William T., and his wife, Gail Atwood, of Auburn; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife on Dec. 4, 1998; and a brother, John J. Atwood.
