STANDISH – Erma Tetley Morton, 97, of Standish, died at home on Wednesday, Aug. 8.
She was born Feb. 4, 1910, in Topsham, daughter of the Rev. Edmund B. and Josie (Linscott) Tetley. She graduated from Bates College in 1929, and taught at Washington Academy in Machias, then at Laconia (N.H.) High School, where she was also a drama coach. After her marriage in 1935 to Hugh Morton of South Paris, they moved to Westbrook where they lived for 30 years, before moving to Standish.
She was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church in Westbrook for more than 70 years, serving on a number of boards and committees and was a deacon emeritus at the time of her death.
In Westbrook, she served as a substitute teacher at the high school.
She was a Boy Scout den leader and a Girl Scout volunteer, first at the service unit level and later as president of the Greater Portland Council. She then served on the New England regional committee at the time of the forming of Maine’s Girl Scout Kennebec Council.
She was an active volunteer for district nursing in Westbrook, the blood bank at Maine General Hospital, was a corporator of Maine Savings Bank and a vice president of the board of directors of the Westbrook Hospital. She was a member of the Current Events Club and served as secretary of her alumni class at Bates.
She and her husband were married for nearly 66 years, until his death in 2001. A devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she is survived by her three children, David Morton, and his wife, Ann (Hastings), of Bryant Pond, Mary Cowan, and her husband, Carl Cowan, of Standish and Margaret Stires, and her husband, W. Dennis Stires, of Livermore; seven grandchildren, Pamela Morton Rowinski, and her husband, Chris Rowinski, of Longmont, Colo., Thomas Morton of Longmont, Colo., Paul Morton, and his wife, Danielle Tran, of Norway, Catherine Cowan Brown, and her husband, David Brown, of Clarksburg, Md., Timothy Cowan, and his wife, Marianne Cowan, of Auburn, Kimberly Stires Ellis and Jeff LaRoche of Auburn and Thomas (TJ) Stires, and his wife, Rachel Stires, of Jay; along with nine great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Helen Morton of Winter Park, Fla.; and several nephews.
The Morton family appreciates the love and support of many friends and relatives, particularly during Erma’s closing days.
