LEWISTON – Gertrude M. Chick, 90, a resident of Sarah Frye Home, Auburn, and a former resident of South Portland, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Central Maine Medical Center.
She was born in Monmouth, on May 10, 1917, the daughter of Arthur J. and Mabel T. Millay Chick. She was a 1935 graduate of Monmouth Academy and received a bachelor’s degree from Gorham Teacher’s College, and a master’s degree from the University of Maine at Orono.
She taught school in Corinna, Pittsfield, Rumford and South Portland, and retired from the South Portland schools after many years of teaching. She was a member of the county, state and national Teachers’ Association, the First Congregational Church of South Portland and of its Women’s Fellowship, the Women’s Literary Union and the Cumberland County Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by 10 nieces and nephews, Roger Chick of Buckfield, Richard Chick, and his wife, Carolyn, of Sabattus, Robert Chick, and his wife, Cynthia, of Auburn, Norman Chick, and his wife, Rowena, of Monmouth, Lois Witham, and her husband, Frank, of Clermont, Fla., James Chick, and his wife, Donna, of Monmouth, Barbara Sultan, and her husband, Robert, of Leeds, Donald Kinney, and his wife, Linda, of Monmouth, Keith Chick, and his wife, Laurie, of Readfield and Kathy Butcher, and her husband, Dwain, of Winthrop; several great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews; a very special friend, Honor Sanville of Portland.
She was predeceased by brothers, George, Benjamin and Arthur Chick Jr; and sisters, Martha Kinney, Annie L. Pratt, Doris M. Chick and Marion Y. Chick.
