AUGUSTA – William H. Schenck, 61, of Winthrop, died Monday, June 25, at MaineGeneral Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 13, 1946, in Springfield, Mass., son of Jules and Elizabeth (Modig) Schenck.
He was educated in Springfield schools and went on to get a B.S. and M.Ed. at Springfield College, where be briefly taught geology.
In 1968, Bill began his career in public education teaching earth science at Minnechaug Regional High School in Wilbraham, Mass. In 1972, he was named assistant principal there; at the time, he was the youngest assistant principal in the state, a fact he was proud of.
In 1984, he became principal at Lisbon High School in Lisbon Falls; and from 1994 to 2006 he was assistant principal at Livermore Falls High School in Livermore Falls. He was much more than a high school administrator: he served as a teacher, role model, friend, and mentor to thousands of young adults. Students felt his presence, knowing he cared about them as individuals.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Nancy Winetrout Schenck, of Winthrop; his daughter, Molly Schenck, of Winthrop and Orono; his sister, Sandra Tracy, and her husband, Al, of West Gardiner; his mother-in-law, Julia Winetrout, of Springfield, Mass; his sister-in-law, Carol Winetrout, of Southbridge, Mass.; and his nephew, Chris Winetrout, of Fiskdale, Mass.
