NORWAY – Winona Edminster Chase, 82, of Norway, died Tuesday, June 5, at Stephens Memorial Hospital, with her family by her side.
She was born in Norway on March 29, 1925, to Winfred and Vernie (Gould) Edminster. She attended Norway schools, graduating from Norway High School in 1942.
She was well-known for playing the xylophone in school bands and the community band and on the radio. She attended Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in Portland for a year, then going to the University of Maine in Orono, Class of 1947, where she was a member and president of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and Pan Hellenic Council. She played percussion for the Bangor Symphony for two years.
She married Dr. Allan S. Chase in 1946, and moved to California for a year and a half then to Medford, Mass., where her husband attended Tufts Dental School and later moved to Norway.
She was very active in civic affairs. She was one of the first members of the Norway planning board, the budget committee, SAD 17 director and charter member and past president of the Norway Lakes Association. She was a member of the Norway Bicentennial Committee, Norway High School Alumni Association Committee, scholarship committee for Dollars for Scholars, member and past president of the Barton Reading Club and past matron and life member of the Eastern Star Oxford Chapter.
She was a life-long member of the Second Congregational Church of Norway, serving as a deacon and trustee. She was a member of the Women’s Fellowship and circle leader for many years, member of Stephens Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and treasurer for more than 25 years and assistant of Alice Cornwall lighting committee. She enjoyed playing bridge, reading, spending many summers at Norway Lake and hunting, especially with her beagles.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Allan Chase of Norway; a daughter, Jennifer A. Chase of Bryant Pond; two sons, Jeffrey E. Chase of Norway and Gregory S., and wife, Penny Chase, of Dracut, Mass.; granddaughter, Allyson M. Chase, and companion, Jeremy Hill, of Norway and Jessie M. Chase of Watertown, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.
