ALFRED – Richard A. Caswell, 77, of Alfred, passed away on May 20, after an 11-year courageous battle with cancer.
“Dick” was born April 18, 1930, and raised in Greenland, N.H., and attended school in Greenland and graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1948.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 until 1953.
He was married to Janet Smart, his high school sweetheart, in 1949.
They were members of the Portsmouth Country Club from 1959 to 1965, and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary there in August 1999.
Upon returning to Greenland after leaving the Air Force he worked for Batchelder Oil Co. of Newington, N.H., from 1953 until 1965. In 1965, he joined Agway Petroleum Corporation of Syracuse, N.Y., and served in several management positions throughout New England until he retired in 1992.
He was a member of the Turner Highlands Country Club in Turner, from 1992 until 1996, where they resided at that time, but he gave up golf that year for health reasons.
He and his wife Janet did, however, continue their passion of 30 years of boating and fishing.
Most of that was done in the larger lakes and rivers of Maine.
They also did quite a little traveling, especially in the USA and Canada.
In 1994, they took an auto trip in the United States encompassing six weeks plus traveling over 9,000 miles and 30 states, stopping at many national parks.
He was a current member of the Greenland Veterans Association.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Janet, of 57 years; a son, Bruce A. Caswell, and his wife, Dawn, of Rochester, N.H.; a granddaughter, Erin Caswell; grandsons, Erik Ethan and Dalton Caswell; a stepgrandson, Jeremy Gowen; a stepgreat-granddaughter, Alexis Gowen; a brother, William Caswell, and his wife, Priscilla, of Greenland, N.H.; a son-in-law, Lawrence Caswell of Brunswick; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Linda G. Caswell of Auburn; his parents of Greenland, N.H.; and an older brother, Roger Caswell.
