FARMINGTON – Caroline (Ross) Frankenfield, 93, formerly of Bailey Island, died Wednesday, May 16, at the Sandy River Nursing Center.
She was born May 3, 1914, in Feasterville, Pa., daughter of Alvin and Martha (Krewson) Ross. Graduated from Doylestown, Pa., High School in 1932. Attended Temple University in 1933, then graduated from Albert Einstein Medical Center in 1936 as a registered nurse. She was head night nurse of medical, surgical and emergency units at Doylestown Community Hospital during the years of World War II.
She married Wayne Frankenfield Sept. 2, 1935. She moved with her family to China in 1952.
She and her husband purchased Kennebec Bean Co. in North Vassalboro in 1969, and she served as an officer of the company until their retirement in 1979.
She was active in the Women’s Christian Alliance of the China Baptist Church, enjoyed oil painting and was a member of the Kennebec Valley Art Association, the Will Ryder Bowling League and the Apple Valley Golf Club. She traveled extensively, visiting Europe and every state in the United States except North Dakota. For many years she made her home on Bailey Island, sharing her love of the ocean with her grandchildren, and she wintered in Florida. She was a great cook, most notably for her homemade biscuits.
She is survived by two sons, Glenn Frankenfield of East Wilton and Coromandel, New Zealand and Leigh Frankenfield of Falmouth; five grandchildren, Mary Ann Frankenfield, and husband, Gary, David Frankenfield, and wife, Jill, John Frankenfield, Liana Stanhope, and husband, Jeff and Andrea L’Hommedieu; eight great-grandchildren, Alison and Jacob Frankenfield, Benjamin L’Hommedieu and Anya L’Hommedieu-Cyr, Jonathan and Nicholas Stanhope and Sam and Sydney Frankenfield.
She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years on Dec. 9, 1998.
