LEWISTON – Alice M. Johnson, 78, a resident of Pond Road, Wales, died Monday, April 16, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

She was born Dec. 11, 1928, in Fayette, the daughter of Ralph L. and Sarah Newcomb Fellows. Alice and her brothers attended grade school in West Gardiner.

With her brothers and the boy next door, she rode her bike to school every day. One day at school, the boys played a trick on her and tied her bike up in the tree. She graduated from Gardiner High School in 1947. On June 27, 1947, in Greene, she married Ronald N. Johnson. After many years together, he predeceased her on May 11, 1991.

She was a wonderful mom to her nine children and never turned a child away from her home. She enjoyed reading, waking up some mornings with her book still in her hands, and she also liked to knit and crochet. When the children were younger, she would have them lay on the floor to get measured for the afghan that she would crochet for them. She knit many pairs of mittens for her children, grandchildren and for the Wales church fair.

In 1991, she started riding a bike, as of 2007, she had worn out five bikes. She logged over 2,000 miles a year on the road, earning widespread local recognition and the nickname “Road Warrior.” She was known to go around the block, from Wales to Monmouth, down Blue Road to Route 202, to the Red Roof Store, then down Leeds Junction Road and back home again. She was a member of the Monmouth senior citizens.

She is survived by two daughters, Gwendolyn Dubay of Zionsville, Ind., and Annette Tibbetts and her husband, Jeff, of New Sharon; six sons, Bruce and his wife, Janice, of Unity, Terry and his wife, Donna, of Litchfield, Brian and his companion, Linda, of Wales, Mark and his wife, Jana, of Poway, Calif., Lee and his companion, Cindy, of Buckfield and Keith and his wife, Kimberly, of North Yarmouth; 18 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Elsie Emery of West Gardiner, Doris Staples of Belfast, and Grace Burrell of Oakland; and one brother, Clarence Fellows of West Gardiner.

She was predeceased by her husband; a 5-year-old daughter, Dolores Johnson; a son-in-law, Lionel Dubay; and sister and a brother.
