SOUTH PARIS – Paul Coolidge Brown, 92, of South Paris died Wednesday, April 4, at Market Square Health Care Center.
He was born in North Waterford on Aug.13, 1914, the son of Walter M. and Fonti E. Brown. With his family, he moved to Norway in 1918. While attending Norway High School, he was active in student government and played on the state championship basketball team.
Following his graduation, he attended the University of Maine where he was a member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity, serving as president during his senior year.
Mr. Brown moved to Boston, Mass., in 1936, and began working at the Tileston and Hollingsworth Paper Co. Over the course of a 35-year career there, he held numerous executive positions, attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University in 1948, and retired as president in 1971.
He married Althea Millett in July 1938. The Browns lived in Needham, Mass., and then later Dover, Mass. They returned each year to spend summer vacations on Norway Lake.
While living in Needham, Mass., Mr. Brown was active in his community, serving as PTA president, elected town meeting member, and serving on the building committee for the Newman Junior High School.
He was also involved in the activities of the Congregational Church, where he volunteered in many capacities including chairman of the board of deacons.
Mr. Brown and his wife returned to the Norway-Paris area in 1973. He was the director of the Oxford Hills Area Development Corporation; and was then town manager of South Paris for 11 years, retiring in 1985.
He was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Norway; a trustee and treasurer of the board for the Norway Memorial Library; an active member and former president of the Norway-Paris Kiwanis Club; and a trustee of Stephens Memorial Hospital for more than 25 years.
He is survived by his children, Ann Lowrey of Germantown, Md., and Hope Pribram and her husband, John, of Auburn; grandchildren, Sarah Pribram and her companion, Eric Darling, of Shelburne, Vt., Margaret Pribram and her husband, Aaron Cockle, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and F. Douglas Lowrey III and his wife, Kerri, of Germantown, Md.; great-grandchildren, Morgan Grace Lowrey and Jacob Paul Lowrey; a brother-in-law, Elwood Millett of Brewer; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Althea Brown; brothers, Theodore Brown of North Conway, N.H., and Robert L. Brown of Norway; and his son-in-law, Frederic D. Lowrey of Gaithersburg, Md.
