FARMINGTON – Gertrude S. Clardy, 89, a longtime resident of North Livermore, died Monday, April 2, at Sandy River Nursing Home.
She was born in Livermore on Dec. 26, 1917, the daughter of George E.H. and Vivian (Hammond) Bisbee.
She was educated in the local schools and graduated from Livermore Falls High School in 1935.
She attended the Central Maine General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1939. She took courses at Bates College and Boston University following graduation.
She was employed as a staff nurse at CMG and later was an instructor at the SMGH School of Nursing.
On Feb. 20, 1946, she married Benjamin Homer Clardy, USN, of Malvern, Ark. They resided in Virginia and California until returning to Livermore in 1962.
From 1969 until her retirement in 1982, she worked for SAD 36 as a school nurse.
She was a member of the North Livermore Baptist Church, Mispah Circle Kings Daughters and Sons of Livermore Falls, Mt. Olivet, Chapter 29 Order of Eastern Star of Auburn, Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association No. 156 Brunswick and the CMG-CMMC Alumni Association.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Benjamin H. Clardy of Jay; two sons, William H. Clardy and his wife, Pam, of Fayette, and George L. Clardy of Camarillo, Calif., and his companion, Christine Gregory, of Beverly Hills, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Ellen Rater of Virginia; 7 grandchildren, Keith Clardy of California, Kurt Clardy of Florida, Benjamin Ryan Clardy of California, Karen Clardy of California, Tessa Clardy of Michigan, Nathan and Rachel Rater of Virginia; and 5 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Benjamin Wayne Clardy, on Dec. 18, 1982.
