WINTHROP – Elizabeth “Betty” Arlene Cook, 89, a lifelong resident of Wayne, passed away Monday, Feb. 26, at Heritage Rehabilitation and Living Center, where she had been a resident for over a year.

She was born Feb 28, 1917, in North Wayne, to Arthur and Bessie (Mower) Smith.

She was educated in local schools and worked as a housekeeper for local people for many years.

She married Carlton L. Cook on Oct. 22, 1933, and became a homemaker and loving mother who enjoyed giving of herself to her children as well as to all her friends.

She enjoyed sewing and made many quilts for friends and family. Her other hobbies included gardening, crafts, and going to yard sales. She will also be remembered for her delicious molasses cookies, sour pickles and custards.

She was a member of the New Sandwich Quilters, the North Wayne Church and was active in the Wayne Community Church, where she served many years on the Missions Commission.

She was also actively involved in the 4-H Club for several years during the time her children were growing up. She enjoyed volunteering at the Wayne Elementary School as a history helper and for the Redwork Program.

She was predeceased by her husband, Carlton, on Jan. 19, 1988; and by a grandson, Craig Lewia.

She is survived by her three sons, Henry Cook and wife, Mary Alice, of Wayne, Floyd Cook and friend, Shelley Given, of Farmington, and Robert Cook and wife, Cheryl, of Belgrade; her two daughters, Esther Lewia of Winthrop, and Dorothy Campbell and companion, Harold Wood, of Manchester; her brother, Ezra Smith and companion, Irma Rice, of Winthrop; 12 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friends, Airlia Currier of Litchfield, Ann Downes of Wayne and Connecticut, and the Rev. James Herrick of Bailey Island.
