ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Loraine Holman Erhard, M.D., died Feb. 5. at University Living.

She was born in Farmington, April 16, 1922, a daughter of Currier C. Holman, Esq. and Rose Skillings Holman. She graduated with honors from Farmington High School in 1940, where she was one of the star basketball players on Farmington’s four-year state championship team. She graduated from Jackson College for Women in 1943, and Tufts University Medical School in 1947.

She did her internship and residency at New England Hospital for Women and Children in 1948, Milwaukee County General and Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1949, and Research Fellow Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh in 1950.

She married Elmo E. Erhard, M.D., in 1950, and moved to Clearfield, Pa., to begin the practice of pediatrics. She obtained her board of pediatrics and became a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1952. She was chief of pediatrics for the Clearfield County Hospital from 1953 to 1977. During that time. she served on boards of the YMCA, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Easter Seal Society, March of Dimes, was president of the Clearfield/Jefferson County Medical Society, was delegate to the PA Medical Society, was delegate to the American Medical Association and member of the First Presbyterian Church of Clearfield, Pa.

She and “Dr. Elmo” moved to Boca Raton, Fla., in 1977, where she worked for the Palm Beach County Health Department in Pediatrics Clinic from 1978 to 2000. They resided summers at Rangeley Lake in Rangeley, Treasure Lake in Dubois, Pa., and Ann Arbor, Mich. She moved permanently to Ann Arbor, Mich., in 2001 to be near her daughter. University Living was her home for the past six years.

During her life in Ann Arbor, her medical care had been expertly coordinated by Dr. Steven Gradwohl, UMMC. For the past year, Arbor Hospice and Home Care assisted in her medical care.

“Dr. Loraine” made house calls during her entire pediatric practice in Pennsylvania. She maintained a “telephone answering time” in the morning, where mothers could speak directly to her with concerns about their children. She was one of the pioneers as a woman in the medical field and for nearly 25 years, the only pediatrician in a 40-mile radius in central Pennsylvania. Many patients truly owe their lives to her delivering antibiotics directly to homes, her diagnostic expertise and her attention to important medical details. She worked hard and was respected as a physician. A beautiful and stylish woman, she “did it her way.”

She is survived by her brother, Joseph F. Holman, Esq., and sister-in-law, Brenda H. Holman, of Farmington; her daughter, Susan Erhard Todd, R.N., M.S., and son-in-law, Robert F. Todd, M.D., Ph.D.. of Ann Harbor, Mich.; two grandsons, Currier Nathaniel Todd and Andrew Joseph Todd; and two stepgranddaughters, Lori Givens and Lisa Bentivogli.
