LEWISTON – Edward A. Woodhead, lifelong resident of Lewiston, died peacefully at his home, 45 Googin St., from the effects of ALS – Lou Gehrig’s disease.
He graduated from Lewiston High School and the Aviation Mechanics Program in Houlton.
Prior to, and following World War II, he was a crew chief testing Corsair F-4/U fighter aircraft at Chance Vought Aircraft in Bridgeport, Conn.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on convoy duty in the North Atlantic.
Following his marriage to Gloria Demers, he returned to Lewiston in 1948, and with his brothers, built the family home on Googin Street.
He worked as a construction electrician for Kerr Electric and E.S. Boulos Co.
Over five decades, he helped to build and install electrical equipment in minesweepers, custom yachts, power plants, paper mills, college dormitories, traffic lights, retail stores and housing projects across Maine.
He was a 55-year member of IBEW Local 567.
He served as treasurer of National Alliance for the Mentally Ill Maine from 1994 through 2000.
In retirement, he accompanied Gloria on travels around the globe. He and Gloria were lifelong members of St. Joseph’s parish.
Their marriage lasted 57 years until her passing in December 2004.
He is survived by his seven children, Gregory, Stephen, Mark, Pamela, John Matthew, Valerie and Jane; sons-in-law, Edward Jawor and Scott Robertson; daughters-in-law, Nancy Woodhead and Joline Woodhead; and five grandchildren, Angela Woodhead, Christopher and Heather Robertson, and Zachary and Isaac Jawor; brothers, Francis, Howard, William, and Daniel Woodhead; his sisters, Lorraine Conant, Evelyn Levasseur, Marilyn Watras, Nancy Allen and Rosalie Lovelace; and his sister-in-law, Dorothy (Richard) Woodhead.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Lawrence and Richard Woodhead; and sisters, Maryann Woodhead and Loretta Cloutier.
