NORTON, Mass. – David Lawrence Arnold, 60, of South Worcester Street, Norton, died at his home on Friday, Jan. 26, of pancreatic cancer. He was the husband of Lynn Durette Arnold, to whom he was married on Nov. 7, 1970, in Cambridge, Mass., at the University Lutheran Church.
He was born in Auburn, Maine, on Oct. 11, 1946, the son of Lawrence and Marjorie (Rolerson) Arnold of Norton and recently Auburn. His childhood was spent in Springvale, prior to moving to Warwick, R.I., where he graduated from Warwick Veterans High School in 1963. Dave excelled in academics and was a member of the high school band and the football, basketball and baseball teams.
He continued his education at Northeastern University in Boston, where he met Lynn and graduated in 1969, with a B.S. in education in mathematics. At Northeastern, he was a member of the Nu Epsilon Zeta Fraternity, now affiliated with the national fraternity, Alpha Delta Phi. His fraternity brothers and eventually their families were an important part of his life. Their love, friendship, and support were there throughout his life and illness and continue to be so for his family.
He pursued his master’s degree at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in mathematics for secondary school educators and it was awarded to him in 1980.
He taught mathematics at North Attleboro High School for 34 years prior to his retirement in 2003. His desire was to share his love of mathematics and its relevancy in life to the hundreds of students in his classes throughout his career.
After his retirement he worked part time between his gardening, building and other hobbies. He enjoyed his employment with the J.E. Case Co., Route 1, North Attleboro, and the Clinical Science Lab, Mansfield, and all of the co-workers he was privileged to work with.
As a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Attleboro for 33 years, he was always an enthusiastic member of the church family, from presiding over the church council to singing in the choir under the leadership of Pastor Pat Potter. No project was too large or small for him to be involved.
He was a charter member of the Williams Chorale, under the leadership of Peter Williams, where he was a member of the bass section. He looked forward to the weekly rehearsals in preparation for their spring and winter concerts. He was a member of the organization’s board of directors and was responsible for the oversight of the scholarship program and fundraising events.
Among his favorite activities was being a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church bowling team that bowled at the North Bowl in North Attleboro. He enjoyed his membership in the North End golf league that played at Heather Hill in Plainville, which created some good family rivalry with his son Jon, also a member.
He leaves two daughters, Linde Arnold of Chatham and Norton, Leigh Arnold of Bangor, and Norton; two sons, Matthew Arnold, and his wife, India, of Portland, Ore. and Jonathan, and his wife, Amy, and their daughter, Molly Lynn, of North Attleboro, Mass.; Molly joined the family on May 1, 2006, and brought Dave such joy; three brothers and their families, Paul Arnold, his wife, Claudia Arnold, and Beth and Seth of Coatesville, Pa., Robert Arnold, his wife, Cindy Arnold and Jeff and Jessica of Warwick, R.I., Bruce Arnold, his wife, Ana Arnold, and Colby and Dustin of Chino, Calif. and Ashley and Brittany of Kent, Ohio; and his nieces and nephews, Heather, Vinnie and Ethan Meyerhoefer of Franklin, N.H., Shane, Chris and Devon of New Hampshire.
