WATERVILLE – Sister Irene Pelletier, CSJ, 90, died Oct. 19, at Mount St. Joseph in Waterville.
She was born Feb. 6, 1916, in Lewiston, the daughter of Polydor and Amanda (Berube) Pelletier.
She received her education at Holy Family School in Lewiston, Lewiston High School and Sacred Heart Academy in Jackman. She obtained her degree in education from St. Joseph’s College in North Windham.
She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Lyon, France in 1932. After her first profession in 1934, she taught kindergarten at Saint Etienne, France, until 1939.
Upon her return to the United States, she taught at St. Anthony in Jackman, Sacred Heart in Auburn and St. Rose of Lima in Jay.
In 1949, she opened St. Joseph Child Care Center in Auburn, where she was administrator from 1970 to 1975. She served as assistant bookkeeper at St. Joseph Provincialate, Winslow, from 1976 to 1993.
She moved to Fontbonne Community in Waterville in 1999.
Survivors include a sister, Anita (Eugene) Fillion of Long Beach, Calif., sisters-in-law, Priscille and Anita Pelletier of Lewiston; brother-in-law, Lionel Bernier, of Lewiston; and many nephews and nieces.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Laurette Pelletier and Murielle Bernier; and brothers, Gerard, Omer, Lucien and Lionel.
