LEWISTON – Mabel Ferris, 84, of Canton, died unexpectedly, Friday, June 23, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was born on May 24, 1922, in Canton, a daughter of Horace and Hildred (Parlin) Worden. She attended Canton schools, graduating from Canton High School in the Class of 1939.
She was married to Chester Ferris on July 2, 1943.
After a period of time spent in South Carolina while her husband was in the service, they returned to Canton and purchased a dairy farm. Together they worked the farm until Chet’s death in 1972.
She continued to run the farm until turning the operation over to her daughter in the late 1990s. She still, however, continued to “supervise” all aspects of the farm, including the most recent expansion into maple syrup production.
She served as president of the Canton Point Ladies Circle and served on the town’s budget committee for many years.
Although a diehard fan of the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Tiger Woods, she was most passionate about the Dirigo High School Cougars. She received the Dirigo Boosters Ultimate Fan Award in 2003.
She loved reading and doing crossword puzzles. She rarely missed her daily cup of coffee with her friends at the Round Table and enjoyed lunches out with the girls.
She took great pride in and had unconditional love for all members of her family. She traveled far and near to see any of her grandchildren in their athletic events. She was an ever-present support to her granddaughter, Jessica, through numerous medical challenges.
She is survived by one son, David Ferris and his wife, Susan, of Buxton; two daughters, Anne Chamberlin and her husband, Art, and Carole Robbins and her husband, Kenny, of Canton; 11 grandchildren, Joshua Chamberlin and his wife, Danis, Zachary Chamberlin, Michael Ferris, Adam Chamberlin and his wife, Rachel, Jeremy Ferris and his wife, Jessica, Jennifer Ferris, Megan Dreher and her husband, Jeff, Daniel Ferris, Ryan Robbins, Matthew Chamberlin and Derek Robbins; a great-granddaughter, Amber Ferris; two sisters-in-law, Velda Worden of Farmington and Betty Worden of Connecticut; and several special nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Chet; a son, Richard in 1993; and a granddaughter, Jessica, in 2005.
Thanks, Gram, for keeping the rain at bay on June 24, 2006. We love you and miss you.
