WALES – Dorothy J. “Dodie” Scammon, 73, of Pond Road, Wales and Bear Pond, Hartford, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side June 20 after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Lewiston, Sept. 23, 1932, to the late Stanley and Pauline (Newman) Brooker.
She graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn in 1949. On Sept. 9, 1950, she married the late Oscar “Ockie” Scammon of Auburn, the love of her life.
Besides raising a family, Dodie loved animals. Many dogs and cats enjoyed life on the farm with her. “The farm” included a unique, 17-sided, 3-story barn in addition to the 10-stable barn attached to the house.
Her love of animals was shown in the care she gave not only to her race horses, but also to the horses she put out to pasture rather than have put down. She enjoyed horse racing tremendously and was a member of the U.S. Trotting Association and Maine Breeders Stakes.
She is survived by her sons, Timothy and wife, Denise, of Auburn, Ronald of Wales and James and wife, Karen, of Auburn; daughter, Vicki and husband, Scot Sennett, of Turner; longtime friend, Kathy Ryder of Wales; a sister, Donna Riggs, of Waterville; grandchildren, Joseph Scammon and wife, Kelly of Leeds, Andrew Scammon and fiancee, Katelyn Giuliano of Mansfield, Mass., Tyler Rose Scammon and fiance, Cory Prindall, of Auburn, Dana Marie and Jeffrey Scammon, of Auburn and Sarah and Matthew Sennett, of Turner; many nieces and nephews; and special, lifelong friends who will miss her dearly.
She was predeceased by her husband; her parents; a brother, Henry Brooker in 2002; and a sister, Beverly Leavitt in 2005.
