FARMINGTON – Margaret A. Ross, 96, of Farmington, died Saturday morning, June 10, at Pinewood Terrace.
She was born on Nov. 21, 1909, in Lynn, Mass., the daughter of Charles A. and Mary Jane (Jenkins) Ryder. She graduated from Lynn Classical High School in 1927.
She married James G. Ross in Rangeley on Oct. 11, 1930. They lived in Rangeley and later moved to Lynn, Mass. In 1948, they returned to Phillips where she lived until 1984 when she moved to Farmington to be nearer her children and grandchildren.
She enjoyed going to the grandkids’ basketball games and making fudge and cookies for all of the team members. Known as the “Cake Lady,” she made beautiful wedding, anniversary and birthday cakes in Phillips for years. She’ll also be remembered for her homemade donuts – she was a wonderful cook.
She loved her flowers, growing gladiolas to sell for many years to support the Methodist Church’s projects. She was a member of the Phillips Garden Club and earned many ribbons for her flower arrangements.
She was a member of the Phillips Rebekah Lodge for many years; Phillips Eastern Star and the WSCS of the Methodist Church, helping cater weddings for years. She painted with Anna Kershner, sharing her paintings with her family. She made mittens and hats for Operation Santa Claus, quilted and participated in local craft fairs selling dozens of mittens and snowflakes.
She joined UMF’s Senior’s Heart Smart exercise group and participated until a broken hip slowed her down at age 86.
She earned her driver’s license at age 60 and drove until she was 92. She maintained her own home until a third major injury required nursing care about two years ago.
She was a staunch supporter of the Red Sox, and enjoyed watching all major sports on TV, especially the Sox, the Celtics and Tiger Woods.
She is survived by her son, Robert J. and friend, Beverly Oliver, and daughter Nancy Porter and her husband, Malcolm, all of Farmington; six grandchildren, Valerie, Steve, Vicki and Fred Ross, Malcolm Porter Jr., all of Maine, and Mary-Ellen Towne of El Dorado, Calif.; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; step-mother, Alice; sisters, Evelyn Dana, Mildred Britner, Dorothy Cann and Clara Ryder; and brothers, Del, Harold and John Ryder.
