AUBURN – Valerie E. LaBrie, 100, of The Chapman House, 41 Pleasant St., Auburn, died June 1, at the Hospice House having only been ill since May 15.
She was born in Brunswick, Aug. 22, 1905, the daughter of Joseph and Beatrice Painchaud Lavoie. She was educated in the schools of Brunswick and moved to Lewiston when she was 19 years old. She was the seventh child in a family of 12 children. She married Leo S. LaBrie on June 24, 1933. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Auburn since 1933, and was an active member of the parish.
She worked at Cushman-Hollis Shoe until 1939, and then became a full-time mother. In the late 1950s, she went back to work at Knapp Shoe as a stitcher until her retirement in 1970. She also sewed costumes for Clara Harnden Desjardins dance studio for a few years.
She belonged to the Auburn Senior Citizens, Robin Dow Seniors and Sacred Heart Church Seniors. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo and did a lot of traveling. She loved to ask people to guess her age and was happy when they would guess her to be 20 years younger.
She took pride in being so independent and living on her own until she entered The Chapman House in November 2004. She truly enjoyed her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren who were the loves of her life. Her Sunday outings in Turner were the highlight of her week. Her smile and happy personality will be sadly missed.
She is survived by one daughter, Betty Spugnardi and husband, John, of Turner; two grandsons, Jere Spugnardi and his wife, Elaine, of Livermore and Michael Spugnardi and his wife, Kim, of Turner; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Tyler and Kylee Spugnardi; several nieces and nephews; and her friends at The Chapman House.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leo, on June 24, 1978; her parents; and 11 brothers and sisters.
