LEWISTON, Maine (AP) – A Catholic church in Lewiston dating back to the 1860s is shutting its doors Tuesday.

Bishop Richard Malone will officiate over the final Mass at St. Joseph’s Church.

A parish history says the cornerstone was laid June 13, 1864, and the church opened three years later.

Shrinking congregations in Lewiston and neighboring Auburn helped bring about the closing of St. Joseph’s and St. Patrick’s churches in Lewiston. St. Patrick’s will hold its final Mass on Oct. 27.

St. Joseph’s is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The brick building is known for its columned nave and the stained glass in almost every window, much of it hand-painted. Murals were painted in the 1920s.
