Farmington – Robert Lewis Hansler, 89, of Farmington passed away Monday, March 27, at Orchard Park Rehabilitation and Living Center.
He was born in Lewiston, on March 7, 1917, the son of Julius and Mary (Purcell) Heanssler. He was educated in the schools of Lewiston and graduated from Lewiston High. Bob married Viola Martel at St. Peter’s Church in Lewiston on May 14, 1949.
After high school, before entering the Army, he delivered coal in Lewiston/Auburn. He then went on to serve his country in World War II from 1941 to 1945, as an airplane spotter and radio and communications specialist. After returning home from Europe he went to work for the A & P grocery stores and Hannaford grocery (then Sampsons) for over 40 years.
He was a devout member of St. Josephs Catholic Church in Farmington. He was known around town for going on his daily walk to get the newspaper at Mickey’s while wearing his three piece suit. He enjoyed talking with passers by and neighbors along the way. He will be sadly missed, but has now joined his beloved Vi who passed in 2003.
Bob is survived by three nephews; John Sheperd and his wife, Diana, of Farmington, Clifton Wood of Brewer, and James Wood of Monmouth; his in-laws, Roland and Lorraine Martel, Pearl Forgues, and Dorris Rainbille.
He was predeceased by his wife, Viola; five sisters, Grace Wood, Bernice “Bunny” Newell, Edith and Myra Spurling, and Hazel Burgoyne; and three brothers, Percy Spurling, Augustus Heanssler, and Earnest Heanssler.
