CANTON – Hilja Elena Pulkkinen Komulainen, 87, passed away early March 9, at Victorian Villa Rehabilitation and Living Center, where she had resided for the last 6 years.
She was born Feb. 13, 1919, to Antti and Auno (Pulkkinen) Pulkkinen of Livermore. She attended the Soper Grammar School in Livermore and graduated from Leavitt Institute in 1935, at the age of 16.
In 1940, she married William M. Komulainen of South Paris at the West Paris Mission Congregational Church. They resided on Wheeler Street in South Paris for 46 years.
She was an active member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of South Paris; also the South Paris Fireman’s Auxiliary, the Finnish American Heritage Society of Maine, and the American Legion Post 72 of South Paris.
She volunteered to make muffins for Stephens Memorial Hospital coffee shop for many years.
She is survived by two daughters, Paula A. Pomeroy of Orford, N.H. and Ruth and her husband, Adelard “Ed” Castonguay, of Livermore; five grandchildren, Michael and his wife, Julie Pomeroy, of Elliott, Elizabeth Pomeroy and her significant other, David Frimodig, of Orford, N.H., Christopher and his wife, Cynthia Castonguay, of Gloucester, Mass., Peter Castonguay and Mary Castonguay, both of Livermore; four nieces and many cousins here and in Kuhmo, Finland.
She was predeceased by her husband; infant daughter, Jane Ellen; two brothers, Uuno Pulkkinen and Antti Pulkkinen, both of Livermore; and a son-in-law, Albert S. Pomeroy.
