UNION – David “Doc” Littlefield, 63, passed away on Jan. 20, in his home, surrounded by loved ones.
He was the son of Ruth and Lewis Littlefield of Auburn. He was born on Sept. 28, 1942, and graduated from Edward Little High School, Gorham State Teachers College (now USM), earned a master’s degree from the University of Connecticut and a doctorate at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
He and his wife, Sally moved to Union in 1979. He taught for 35 years, 26 of which were spent at Camden Hills Regional High School, where he became science department head and fondly known as “Doc.” He taught biology, including his favorite course research biology. He was a passionate teacher who sought to make a difference in the lives of the students.
In addition, “Doc” was also an avid sports fan and coached girls’ basketball. He was involved in the local community and served as the chairman of Union’s Recreation Committee for 20 years. He ran the summer recreation program for young children and taught youth and adult tennis lessons. He also served 13 years on the SAD 40 school board and for one year as its chairperson.
He took pride in his home and worked hard with his wife designing and constructing beautiful gardens and stone walls, which surround their farm. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend and will be dearly remembered for his love, kindness and generosity, as well as his hard work ethic, dedication to his community and his unassuming nature.
He will be remembered by his wife of 40 years, Sally; his daughters, Julie, of Manchester, Mass. and Janet, of Hebron; his sister, Dale Sherburne and her husband, Russ, of Gardiner and their children, Holly and Heidi; his sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Jim Drummond, of New Gloucester and their children, Katie and Michael; his mother-in-law, Clarice Barrell, of New Gloucester; sister-in-law, Marcia and her husband, Richard King, of Tucson, Ariz.; and all others who happily have called him friend.
