LEWISTON – Annette H. Clifford, 97, of Lewiston, died Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Central Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Orland on March 17, 1908, the daughter of Henry and Evelyn Stevens Hayden. She graduated from Buckfield High School in 1926. In 1927, she married Frank H. Piper, who died in 1935. In 1944, she married Robert H. Clifford, who is now deceased.

Except for three years, during World War II, when she worked as a ship welder at Bath Iron Works, she devoted her life to nursing. She graduated from Wayne School of Nursing in 1950. She did private duty nursing until 1959, worked at Hebron Sanitorium until it closed in 1962, and was employed at the Augusta State Hospital. From 1965 to 1975, she was head nurse at the Odd Fellows Home in Auburn. She later became head nurse at the Auburn Home for Aged Women until 1985.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church and Fidelity Rebekah Lodge.

She is survived by a daughter, Evelyn Piper-Keene of Lewiston; four sons, Carroll H. Piper and his wife, Dixie, of Poland, Francis A. Piper and his wife, Laura Mae, of Middletown, N.Y., Frank H. Piper and his wife, Velora, of Mechanic Falls, and Robert H. Clifford Jr. and his wife, Lori, of Norwich, Conn.; a sister, Dorothy Billings of Auburn; three half-sisters, Virginia Farron of Florida, Emma Simmons of Waterville, and Hilda Saunders of Auburn; two half-brothers, Leroy Saunders and Merle Saunders, both of Orland; grandchildren, Valerie Leonard of Auburn, Jeff Keene of Lewiston, Karen Piper of Haverhill, Mass., John Piper of Poland, Daniel Piper of Middletown, N.Y., Darlene Boyd of Mechanic Falls, Doreen Piper of Mechanic Falls, and Crysta Clifford of California; great-grandchildren, Fatima Leonard of Kansas, Amanda Sherrer of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Allison Boyd of Mechanic Falls, Joshua Gallop of Poland, Destiny Jennings of New York, Eric Piper of Middletown, N.Y., and Darian Spielvogel of California; and a great-great-grandson, Alexander Sherrer of Florida.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Piper, in 1935; two brothers, Hudson and Paul; and a grandson, Gregory Jayson Keene.
