TURNER — SAD 52 Adult & Community Education has announced upcoming enrichment courses. Classes are held at 486 Turner Center Road.

Classes starting this week include:

Sub Training: This course is one step in the substitute teacher application process. Participants will learn about SAD 52 school expectations, teacher’s lesson plans and assertive discipline. A high school diploma is required and a college degree preferred.

Understanding Medicare: The course will ask, when are you eligible for Medicare benefits? What is the timeline to enroll without penalties? What does and doesn’t Original Medicare cover? What additional plans are available that work in conjunction with it? The course will offer a brief overview of financial assistance options.

Essential Oils – A Natural Option: The class will cover the top 10 fundamental oils and their uses for health and wellness. Students will take home your own essential oil blend.

Making Friends with IEP: For parents, foster parents or anyone who has or works with a child who has an IEP or has 504 plan, this class will follow the process of an IEP and how to navigate through the laws, rights, time frames and definitions.

Chair Caning: Caners will learn to restore a family heirloom or start a new tradition by learning the seven-step caning process.  Students should bring a chair with drilled holes. No experience is needed.

Classes starting the week of March 13 include:

Reusable Shopping or Beach Bag: Students will crochet with plastic yarn made from the bags from the grocery store. A basic knowledge of crocheting is necessary to participate. Those attending should bring crochet hooks in size I, J or K and lots of plastic bags.

Financial Wellness: Financial understanding for everyday situations: A wide variety of topics will be covered, including building a budget, basic credit understanding and impact, how to build credit, setting your financial sights and how to organize money.

Alcohol Ink Painting on Yupo: Students will receive step-by-step instructions of painting with colorful alcohol inks and create “Love Tree” 5- by 7-inch painting in one night. No experience is needed, and all supplies will be provided.

Learn to Knit: My First Hat: Knitting is a relaxing hobby, with a usable end product. Students will learn the essentials of knitting in the round. They’ll start with long tail cast-on, join to knit (and maybe pearl) in the round, do decreases and learn to finish. Those attending should bring six 9 needles; yarn will be provided.

Transition Planning for High School: Participants will learn about the IEP requirements for transition planning and how guardians and students can be involved to guide the decisions that are made. The course will also explore various options for independent living.

PowerPoint Intro: The class will explore the basics of building a PowerPoint presentation for business, educational or personal presentations. No experience is necessary.

Goat Milk Soap: Students will transform common kitchen ingredients into beautiful handcrafted soap. In the first night, students will learn the science of soap-making, safety tips, tools and ingredients. Using a basic recipe, they will make a simple but luxurious soap. During the second night, students will expand their repertoire by adding color, scent and exfoliants.

Driving Dynamics: Students can improve their defensive driving awareness and abilities. The course will discuss collision avoidance techniques, safety issues, driver habits and attitudes, and the basic elements that constantly challenge drivers on Maine’s highways. Those who complete the course will receive a three-point credit on their driving record.
