WINTHROP – Eugene H. Schmitt Sr., 94, of Winthrop, died Saturday, Sept. 24, at Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston, as a result of injuries suffered in a fall at his home.

He was born in New York on Jan. 8, 1911, the son of Archibald and Margaret (Schmitt) Schmitt.

Gene lived in New Jersey prior to moving to Maine in 1966. He worked for Inmont until it closed, and continued working part-time as a consultant until December 2004.

An avid bowler, he was among bowlers who represented Maine at the ABC Senior Championships at Reno, Nev., in 1997 and in Milwaukee, Wis., in 2002.

He is survived by his children, Roberta Schmitt, Dorothy Best, Eugene Schmitt Jr., Maggi Berry, Edwin Schmitt and Ernest Schmitt; a sister, Evelyn VanZandt of Chalfont, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Anna Schmitt, in 1992.
