MECHANIC FALLS – Urho E. “Speed” Kyllonen, 94, of Mechanic Falls died peacefully at his home, Monday, Aug. 29.

He was born in Deuluth, Minn., Aug. 23, 1911, the son of Kallie and Annie Smed Kyllonen. He moved to Hebron and Minot as a young boy, and attended school at the Brighton Hill one-room schoolhouse.

He worked for the town of Minot, before opening his first garage on Route 11, South Main Street, in Mechanic Falls. When it burnt down, he bought the Main Street Garage in the center of town.

He was married to the former Christine Paul, also of Mechanic Falls; she predeceased him.

He loved hunting and fishing, and was a member of Tyrian Lodge 73 AF & AM, the Kora Temple Shrine and the Finnish-American Heritage Society.

He was very excited this past week, on his 94th birthday, to enjoy pictures with two of his local families of five generations.

He is survived by a daughter, Chris Smith of Mechanic Falls; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a niece, Verna Coolidge; and a nephew, Rudy Kyllonen.

He was predeceased by his brother, Rudy Sr.; a sister, Anne Kyllonen; his parents; his wife; a son, Tom; and a son-in-law, David Smith, all of Mechanic Falls.

His daughter would like to thank Dr. Singh and members of Androscoggin Home, Health, and Helping Hands for giving her help and comfort through all of his time home.
